Manager, Domestics Ops I, Chicago

The Manager, Domestic Ops I will be a member of the domestic logistics team based in Chicago. They will be responsible for regional management of chassis distribution and balancing, forecasting chassis supply/demand, chassis repositioning, and will interface directly with customers and vendors. Saturday and Sunday on-call rotation for complete network.


  • Assess and adjust inventory needs based on migration, inbound, and forecast
  • Respond to daily railroad/customer requests, actions required
  • Build relationships with primary customers, interface regularly
  • Participate in scheduled and/or ad hoc customer meetings
  • Manage a team of two in day-to-day operations
  • Understand the terms of agreements and execute accordingly
  • Meet pre-determined goals and objectives
  • Communicate with management and pool management teams potential capacity/service concerns
  • Create and distribute reports as required
  • Assign repositioning requests to the appropriate carrier based on capacity and costs
  • Identify new carriers to support repositioning needs
  • Negotiate drayage rates and execute carrier agreements
  • Monitor repositioning work orders to ensure appropriate pricing and timely submissions
  • Adopt best practices and support the development of standard operating procedures
  • Prepare, recommend, and implement administrative tasks on an ad hoc basis
  • Propose solutions to senior management to improve service, process, and/or savings opportunities
  • Provide team support of network management (Saturday/Sunday)
  • Support, challenge and drive business excellence and business change within DCLI
  • Responsible for market research to identify current trends and use statistical and analytical tools to predict future trends and patterns which could affect DCLI
  • Investigate and where applicable, recommend technology solutions to various DCLI work processes
  • Utilize, investigate, and explore all forms of existing, nascent, and emerging tracking systems and communication mediums to improve DCLI processes
  • Liaise with other business units to promote working relationships and common goals
  • Promote a sense of teamwork and urgency


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Three to five years of related experience
  • Minimum of three years experience in the transportation/trucking industry with an emphasis on load planning or dispatch
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal as required to both technical and non-technical colleagues
  • Ability to think conceptually and theoretically
  • Able to work independently and manage several tasks concurrently
