An Intermodal Equipment Provider (IEP) is a company that makes intermodal equipment available to motor carriers for interchange and develops and implements procedures to repair the equipment from damages, defects, or deficiencies.

What is Intermodal Equipment?

Intermodal equipment, mainly chassis, is trailing equipment that is used in the intermodal transportation of containers. An IEP facilitates the transport of goods with intermodal equipment and is responsible for systematically inspecting, repairing, and maintaining the chassis. These responsibilities are expected to help result in fewer out-of-service chassis and fewer breakdowns with the overall goal of creating safer commercial motor vehicle operations.

An Intermodal Equipment Provider that offers intermodal equipment for transportation must register as an IEP via the Unified Registration System (URS). This is the first step for an IEP to comply with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs). Once the online application is completed and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) receives it, the IEP is assigned a USDOT number. IEPs are also responsible for meeting certain requirements governed by the FMCSA in order to operate. The requirements can be found on the FMCSA website.
